  • Bedtime alcohol consumption among older persons may lead to unsteadiness if walking is attempted at night, increasing the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Alcohol is made as plant sugars in fruits come into contact with a fungus called yeast and they begin to ferment; as they rot, they will excrete a toxic substance called ethanol or ethyl alcohol--or simply alcohol. In the fermentation process, the yeast continues to feed on the plant sugars, thus the alcohol concentration levels rise; once these levels get closer to 14 percent, the yeast dies, quite literally, of alcohol poisoning.
  • According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), even a very small amount of liquor can negatively affect an infant's development and cause low birth weight.
  • Alcohol also may interfere with normal sperm structure and movement by blocking the metabolism of vitamin A, which is essential for sperm development.
