  • Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a serious medical situation that includes four symptoms: Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Loss of control: The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to "get high."
  • COHs (Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages) are heavily marketed in youth-friendly media (e.g., on web sites with downloadable images) and with youth-oriented graphics and messaging (e.g., connected with extreme sports or other risk-taking behaviors).
  • Binge drinking (consuming 4 or more drinks per occasion for women; 5 or more drinks per occasion for men) is responsible for over half of the deaths and two-thirds of the YPLL (years of potential life lost) due to excessive drinking, and is associated with many health and social problems, including alcohol-impaired driving, interpersonal violence, risky sexual activity, and unintended pregnancy.
  • Brain imaging studies have found that after consuming alcohol, even social drinkers find it difficult to tell the difference between threatening and non-threatening social stimulus.
