Several different factors can influence how alcohol can affect a person, such as age, gender, physical condition, and various other medicines that they may be taking.
Unmarried workers (divorced, separated or never married) have about twice the rate of alcoholism or alcohol abuse as married workers.
Driver's license suspension and license revocation seem to be the most effective deterrents among the general driving population; a recent government study concluded that the most effective means for reducing the rate recidivism for driving under the influence of alcohol (DWI, DUI) and crashes was a combination of license suspension and interventions such as education, counseling, and some follow-up.
Current drinking during the previous month among persons aged 18 to 20 years declined significantly from 59% in 1985 to 40% in 1991, coincident with states adopting an age 21 minimum legal drinking age, but increased to 47% by 1999.
