  • Several different factors can influence how alcohol can affect a person, such as age, gender, physical condition, and various other medicines that they may be taking.
  • Unmarried workers (divorced, separated or never married) have about twice the rate of alcoholism or alcohol abuse as married workers.
  • Driver's license suspension and license revocation seem to be the most effective deterrents among the general driving population; a recent government study concluded that the most effective means for reducing the rate recidivism for driving under the influence of alcohol (DWI, DUI) and crashes was a combination of license suspension and interventions such as education, counseling, and some follow-up.
  • Current drinking during the previous month among persons aged 18 to 20 years declined significantly from 59% in 1985 to 40% in 1991, coincident with states adopting an age 21 minimum legal drinking age, but increased to 47% by 1999.
