  • Problems among underage member of the military who consume alcohol include: serious consequences (15.8 percent); alcohol related productivity loss (19.5 percent); hazardous drinking (25.7 percent), harmful drinking (4.6 percent), or possible dependence (5.5 percent)
  • Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Psychiatric problems, including depression, anxiety, and suicide.
  • Binge drinking (consuming 4 or more drinks per occasion for women; 5 or more drinks per occasion for men) is responsible for over half of the deaths and two-thirds of the YPLL (years of potential life lost) due to excessive drinking, and is associated with many health and social problems, including alcohol-impaired driving, interpersonal violence, risky sexual activity, and unintended pregnancy.
  • According to the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, an individual who has been arrested for drunk driving for the first time has driven drunk up to 80 times prior to their being caught.
